I understand the motives behind the latter (even though your data is incorrect: there was more damage than a town's ruins. way more) but what miraculous reason might you have for disliking the word 'learnt'? Do you propose we use some other expression, and if so, which one?

Well professor, how about learned, like a normal person. And if the damage was worse then destroying a town why are you joking about it

Well, how about you're being a total dick now. You'd probably have something to say about using 'colour', too.
As for black humor, guess you haven't heard of it yet. It's not so horrible to make jokes out of terrible things, specially not death or something else that can't be prevented or changed. It's a way of coping with things. It's not a particularly nice way but still. Better than dicking about spelling variations between US and UK. :P
