The flag does represent southern heritage. The southern heritage of hating black people and losing wars. Seriously, the Confederate flag is a flag that represents the Confederacy, period. Battle flag or not, it's a symbol of the Confederacy, it stands for all the Confederacy stood for. Now, if you have a fifth grade education and can read, you can see for yourself that the Confederacy was formed to defend the "particular institution" of slavery by reading the states' secession declarations. This is not rocket science, people...the entire southern argument for keeping the flag, once you fact check all the ignorant bullshit, is "we don't ACTUALLY know anything about it, but them darkies hatebit so it must be something we proud white folks should defend."
The Confederacy did support slavery, but was made essentially to support state rights. If the only argument you can present for banning the Confederate flag is they supported slavery them you would have to ban the American flag, British flag, and many other because they have also supported slavery. It is true they got rid of it voulentarily and the South was forced to; but slavery was not the main focus of te Confederacy.
And also there is a great difference between a movement that slaughtered millions of people and a movement, that while wrongly imprisoned thousands, didnt attempt to eradicate an entire culture.
This guest was right. My ancestors went to war barefoot. They didn't do that just so that rich people could own slaves. Not only that, but there were white slaves, Native Americans slaves, and Asian slaves too. Schools do not teach fact. They teach little truths that manipulate you into believing what they want you to. And they lie.

My ancestors literally went to war barefoot, they did not do it so the rich could own the innocent.
And even at that, we are comparing flags. The battle flag has become a symbol of southern heritage, it was never just a symbol of slavery in the beginning, but it has nothing to do with slavery anymore. The nazi flag was only used by nazis for their dictatorship. It has never changed from that.
I disagree, due to association the swastika can never go on another flag. It will always be connected to the nazis and antisemitism. Likewise the confederate flag, no matter how it began, is a symbol of slavery.
But that's not what the fought for. They fought because they thought their way of life was threatened. The war would have still happened without slavery. It actually might have gone the other way if it hadn't because the south would have more troops and Lincoln wouldnt have the moral high ground with freeing the slaves. The point is, they werent fighting to keep slavery itself. Just what thy thought was their livelihood.
And their livelihood revolved around slavery it comes back to it. The flag itself however does not represent slavery it represents southern independence and rebel freedom because they thought they were being oppressed.
Well. Yes you can. I can bully someone then be bullied myself, but that's beside the point. They THOUGHT they were being oppressed. They saw this northerner and they thought he was going to enforce the northerner veiw of anti-slavery. Though he eventually did after many battles and lost lives, he originally said he was going to leave slavery the way it is, in an attempt to stop the succession of the southern states.
Not want it banned. Just removed from public squares and public lands. Send it to museums. Fly it on the back of your pick-up truck. Do as YOU like. But don't have the state government fly it high as it doesn't represent the people as a whole as a normal state flag does.
I don't want it banned banned, but it really doesn't need to be flying over gocernemnt buildings.
though some are taking it WAY too far. Apple was removing any game with the flag on it ( even civil war based games, which is stupid ) but worst of all it prompted a new challenge. The challenge was that whenever anyone ( mainly targeted towards black individuals ) saw a Confederate flag they were to remove it. And this was started by people running onto private property ( which can get you shot, and legally you would be in the wrong ) and running through traffic to pull it off vehicles
it ought to be removed from public buildings, personally i am allllll for people keeping the confederate flags, it helps me know who to avoid without speaking to them. some places went a little over the top trying to make their stance clear by banning the flags completely, but still its a businesses independent right to decide they are done with a symbol, so whatever, they can ban whatever within their own company, but no the gov't has no business banning it.
As a Texan the confederate flag for me represents all the men that died in the south during the civil war. Those men may have been for slavery but they still had families that love them, they still had people that missed them when they were gone. They were still people. I don't have a confederate flag but in downtown San Antonio we have a statue that says "remember the fallen" with a confederate flag underneath it. I wouldn't want the statue removed because I think that's disrespectful for those that died during the war.
This is EXACTLY what I have been trying to get people to understand. The flag has nothing to do with slavery anymore, well, not for the general population of people who would fly it(i cant speak for everyone). It is something slightly different for everyone. For me, its my home. It's where i came from and the culture i live in. For you, it's a reminder of the men who died in the civil war. And for that, a million upvote's, if i could, to you madam. Thank you
If itst for a monument, that's different. But when you're flying it in government settings then it's showing you're flying under the Confederate flag which means you agree with what they were about then.
It belongs in museums and memorials and the such, but not on places like schools and rec centers and city halls.
Because in america, there still exists a thing called freedom, the definition of which has been forgotten by the majority of the world and likely by all of you. Every small infringement on liberty brings us 1 step closer to an orwellian dystopia. And so, while I may not agree with the KKK or the rebel flag, I will fight to the death to defend their right to peaceably express their opinions. I will not stand idly by while the thought police make first these flags illegal and then make speech against the government or ruling party illegal with the next stroke of the pen.
No, lordblackdragon is correct. The constitution only protects the rights of the people to have free speech. The government itself has no such protection and must be impartial to all groups. Flying a symbol of oppression to a group of American citizens is not protected. I agree with him or her and so does the law.
Really, tho, the Constitution only protects your free speech to where you can't be jailed for it. So you can legally fly things like the nazi flag in your yard, but like you said the gocernemnt doesn't have that so they can't fly it over, for example, a city hall or the white house even if someone held those ideals there.
That's why we only fly flags from countries and states.
Tbh I think it's a good thing they banned the nazi flag in Germany. Cause they had a lot of war debts and if the flag was still flying it would ruin a lot of tourism and they still wouldn't have payed off the ones from WW1.
Sort of like those " pay less than a dollar to feed these porn African kids " that make Africa look terrible, so no one goes there to contribute to the economy.
If it was a flag that represented the murder and inslavement of MILLIONS of WHITE PEOPLE, we would not be having this discussion because the flag would have been banned a long time ago
Guest, there weren't millions of slaves, at least not in America.
Time to learn some shit
So 12 million Africans were SOLD I to slavery ( not kidnapped ), 2 million died on the voyage. Only about 300,000 were in America. Then some more from the Caribbean which totaled about 450,000, not even half a million. Hell, Brazil received 4.5 million at the beginning. WAY more than us.
But in the numbers game, there were MANY more white slaves in America than black ones. Irish slaves were a lot cheaper than black ones ( black ones being 50 sterling and the Irish being worth 5 sterling ) and the English even killed 500,000 then sold about 300,000 into slavery, knocking the 1.5 million population of Ireland to a mere 600,000

@underyourbed. What white mans history book did you get those BS facts from? Ofcourse you will never want to tell the truth about what America really did. Let's make it seem like it wasn't so bad and hey not that many slaves were killed oh and hey yeah by the way lets wave our racist ass flag in your face everyday while we are at it
@underyourbed oh and white slaves??? Lmao please don't even try to compare white slaves in Amerikkka to African slaves or slavery. Stop trying to minimize the horrible genocide whites committed many years ago. Just accept it and do better. Better than you did native Americas or African slaves. Don't forget the Japanese :-/
notice how this thread went from freedoms to people putting themselves into a group and labeling it by skin color. then saying another group by another color did something terrible against the first. If that doesn't promote racism I don't know what does

Of course we would be having this discussion because I would still think that they shouldn't be able to ban the flag.

And btw, Japanese history is full of them commuting the genocide of the Natives of their own land.
Also I'm 1/4 Cherokee and the rest is Irish/Scottish. So you need to step on back.
