Some people are generous because they can be and want to be kind to you; others give the bare minimum when they see you have 'earned' it. Two kinds of people.

I used to wait tables at a waffle house in a small town and young people rarely tipped. But some did. Some people tipped great while others left change. Whether I was on point or not. I can't really say that one specific group of people tipped better than others honestly.

Well you see
I live in a country
Where you don't need to tip
Because waiters and waitresses actually get paid decent amounts
There's a video by CollegeHumor in the Adam Ruins Everything series about tipping and why it sucks - look it up.
Some people expect 20%, and the fancier the place the more you'll be expected to tip. But typically 15% is a pretty acceptable amount for a bill anywhere.
20% is normal 15% is acceptable but kinda a douchy move. personally i tip 20 and then round up a little to make a smooth number. i'll do 15% if i felt like the server could have done better but wasnt "bad"
For the record, i agree that its not racist to describe someones skin color. The question here isnt wether or not he has white skin, the question is wether or not the statement that he is white was written with to imply stereotypical "rich white man" characteristics......whitch it certainly does.
AWESOME except what does it matter that it was a "white" guy who complained? oh, right, because everyone who is white is an asshole. if you had just said rich guy I would have gotten the message. awesome story tho
I worked in food and bev for a long time. You should tip 20% for great service, 15% for good service, and less only if the server was very inattentive. If you feel that your country has a better system, so be it. However, if you come to the states and don't tip because you think it is silly or what have you, then please realize you are affecting someone's paycheck and ability to provide for themselves. Servers do not receive their hourly paychecks as the majority goes to taxes and they have to tip out other staff members (bartenders, busboys, etc.) a percentage of whatever you order. Therefore, if you don't tip, the server just paid to wait on you. So just do the right thing and tip appropriately or do not eat in a restaurant. Also, servers do not want to wait on teenagers because the majority of them don't tip/ don't tip well. That is just the fact of the matter. Parents should teach their kids that kind of thing but most dont think about it. Sorry for long comment. Have a great week
I'm a "rich asshole" type and I always tip 15% even when the service isn't that good. Exception: When the meal is only like $5 or $7, I figure taking the order, bringing the food and topping off my coffee is worth more than the 15% which would be less than a dollar, so I usually tip $2. So, not every rich asshole is a bad tipper.
I did. The kid said 'No" to charity from his friends, I read that. But why would he accept charity from a random stranger INFRONT of his friends? And if the kid also looked poor, how come the mom shows up later with 20 bucks? I imagine any adult would realise that if they're so poor that other people notice it by their appearance alone, it's a bad idea to spend 20 bucks on a tip for a kid who gave your son a 3 dollar milkshake for free.
Cute story but I call BS for all of it. It makes no sense.
Ah, you're right. Still, 70$ for giving a kid some milkshake? I mean, call me a pessimist, but I doubt it happened.
The guy refusing to pay even 15% I believe. Hell, I'd believe it if the kids pooled 15 bucks and left it as a tip, but 50?
