They're also paying more than $1 for it to begin with and then there's the costs of shipping and storage too, along with the cost of paying someone to order it for them and other administrative costs. The point is, it isn't that simple. (And as a side note, I do think hospital stuff is overpriced as well.)
you get charged separately for the people and hospital care, the prices for products are their own things and insane. i saw a couple of my hospital bills in the dark years before insurance and they were bananas.

When my daughter was born, she was in the NICU for 101 days and the itemized list for their cost was more than half a million dollars. Fortunately, insurance covered all but a $30 copay to have her eyes checked.
Tylerchu, it costs a dollar to make but they charge eight hundred dollars for it. This means that they charge 800 times the actual price. Therefore it's an 80,000 percent markup. Also, you do know that $1.00= 100¢ not 1000¢ right? Maybe you forgot how to multiply?
its easy to get turned around when changing dollars into cents and wholes into percents... esp when something is churning in your brain, like the impossibility of this system of medical emergency = bankruptcy.
