I believe that it's a reference to the TV show Firefly, which was cancelled far before its time.

I was about to get indignant that y'all didn't know, but I paused and remembered that Firefly was: short lived, 14 episode series, three episodes didn't air, on 13 years ago and the spinoff sequel was ten years ago.
