Yes, more died, but that doesn't make one less tragic than the other. You need to stop trying to win 9/11 with a story of loss and start supporting all the families that lost loved ones from both tragedies. It's not a damn contest.
In 20 years, when the Iraq War has come to a complete close and the truth is finally revealed to the public, you'll see. Not only did German citizens not know of the atrocities of the camps, but they were unaware of the reasons behind the camps.
Actually most of the German citizens did not know about the concentration camps or about all the other horrible things Hitler did. "None of what you said is right" my ass, at least that part was.
I don't mean to be that person who points things like this out, but is this trying to one up 9/11? Both were tragedies, we don't have to prove one was worse because of the body count.
What about people like the Scholl siblings? People who stayed and tried to fight back or who stayed to help jews leave the country? They weren't exactly war assets.
I am german and this is not a THING. A lot of ctiys have been bomb during WWII and there is no special day for "remembering Darmstadt". Never heard about it. People in germany remember the date 9/11 for two things:
a) The terrorist attack in NY 2001
b) The Chilean coup d'état in 1973
By the way: the name "Darmstadt" means "gastrointestinal tract city"
(Darm = gastrointestinal tract
Stadt = City)
THANK YOU! and I think it's amazing how other countries will always support America on 9/11 and remember those who lost loved ones, even when it didn't happen to their country. So thank you.
You guys are kidding, right? Do they not teach World War 2 in your school? Prior to declaration of war with the US, Germany was sinking US ships beacuse they were taking things to England. When Japan attacked the US, it declared war on them, then Germany decalred war on the US because of the pact they had with Japan. Germany had already attacked Belgium and France and was in the process of exterminating Jews and other undesireables. The US was committed to winning this war instead of just maintaining lines (like later in Korea). The least loss of life in war is going to be when it's terrible for a short time rather than half-assed perpetually. The German government that caused all this was not some occupying entity, but the democratically elected government. So, as a people, this is what the country wanted.
The people elected Hitler because he said he would give people jobs (the economy was majorly fucked partially because of the peace treaty from WW1). He got elected after he disposed of all rivalry. Later he claimed himself dictator over Germany. The people did not want the war, they wanted jobs and SOME wanted revenge on the allies because of what they did after WW1
Also Germany would have won the war if it wasn't for a few mistakes and if Hitler wouldn't have been such an idiot.
so to get your empathy for civilians being bombed, those civilians have to be innocent people that have never made mistakes in their lives? holy shit. Of course everybody killed on 9/11 in New York was free of any wrong doing? Nobody deserves this not even the worst kind of people. I am from Darmstadt and we dont mourn or think of those people that have lost their lives to the bombing. Its just a simple fact that it happened and everybody goes on with their life the way they usually do, and a little fun fact: most of those people killed were children and women, because the men had died or were dying in the war. After almost every inch of the city was destroyed those left behind rebuilt the city by themselves because they didnt get any help from the government or what so ever. So if you dont feel any sympathy, you are not even better than those people that died in the bombing because they probably felt the exact same way about all the jews and minorities that were killed by the nazis
Everyone else is a war asset.

War is terrible, but if you're in one, then win.
