The US military is a mostly volunteer force composed of otherwise ordinary people.
They are us, and we love them for it.

I'll do that, I'll probably join as a doctor there, but I want to like work in the field with the soldiers, not sit around bases you know.

juveniles of a certain age that commit certain crimes are given the choice of jail time or service in the military. Many choose the military.

personally i would consider it a choice between jail and conscription.

What? It's a choice between prison and army. Conscription is the drafting of people to join the army, legally forcing them to.
