that's wrong. it stays wrong even if you're downvoting.

I'm not downvoting anything. I like being in the lane I need to be in long before I need to be there because sometimes people are assholes and won't let other people merge.
I'm almost always either in the slow or middle lane anyhow as my main vehicle is technically only allowed in the fast lane to overtake another which I rarely do anyway since I have no reason to rush.

Please please please please please zipper merge. Go ALL THE WAY TO THE END of your lane, then as already stated go 1-2-1-2 in turns.
Why the downvotes? This person is right, everyone should do it this way...

It's encouraged by a lot of traffic engineers. Late merging means both lanes are full all the way to the end, which takes some of the load off other lanes. The 1-2-1-2 method keeps the traffic moving smoothly, and it makes it impossible for assholes to speed past people who properly merge because the proper merge is being done at the point where the merge has been created by the builders instead of before. I THINK it might be law in some places.
See the problem with going to the absolute end is. People often think you're an asshole. Which in a lot of cases they are. But also, people won't follow the 1,2,1,2 shit. If you're all the way there and you let someone in there's other assholes behind that person that push their way in as well and then you're stuck. Sorry. No.
Yes correct. Zipper merge is technically correct but nobody actually wants to let you in at the last moment. And as is always my plan with life, have a way out. Plan to merge early and if nobody lets you you can trundle a bit forward and try again.

There's a lot of construction around my way, plus a handful of merges for on ramps. It's pretty common practice that if the traffic is going regular speed nobody cares what you do, but if it's rush hour you're going to the end because nobody is letting you in before that. This is a common practice mostly because drivers from the middle lane will pull out, drive ahead several cars, and try to get back in. But, if that lane is filled and everybody has to wait their turn those assholes don't get very far. And while I've occasionally had a second car push ahead into the line when I was letting in a merging vehicle, the majority seem to respect the one at a time rule.
I have this debate everyday, and since I live in a smaller population compared to most other places it's a little different. If people actually adhered to the zipper effect it would be good, but since 95% of people in the closing lane are going 20 over and refuse to use a blinker, thy force their way into the other lane. The base lame moving ends up stopping so the merge lane can empty out, and it ends up going 1-2-1-2-2-2-2-2-1-2-2-1-2-2-1-2-2-2-2-2-2-2-1
Screw that. It means yield at the bottleneck. You fucks that get inline are holding back traffic. o to the cone and merge 1/2...1/2 like humans should. Or just get in line like a sheep.
Oh and not the assholes that try to push their way in front because they think for some reason they're special? Fuck you and fuck people like that. I never let people in that try and do that. Should've merged further back like a normal person would have
