It's such a minor difference. I can't tell if I'm watching DVD or Blu-Ray.

It's a 550 pixel wide image (or so), so you can't really see much difference. The only way to appreciate HD stuff is to see it in it's native HD resolution, that's the whole point. I love when they have blu-ray ads on regular dvds, and show a comparison. You totally can't tell.

As one who prefers to purchase my entertainment, there's no way in hell I'm buying blu-ray.

So... it was rendered differently for the Blu-Ray version. That has nothing to do with the resolution, or even the bit-rate.

The background has more detail I'm the DVD one.

It's not the same image on both sides though. As in it isn't a mirrored image so there just happens to be more items in the background on the left side.
