I think it depends on the place you're looking to work at. The resume that got me hired at my current job got me a freaking low scoring B in class. It's all about personal preference. However, if you're looking for jobs in marketing or social media aspects, you need to think outside the paper and go with other forms of media.
I used to work on a trade desk and I would read applicant resumes... If you need a gimmick like this to get noticed, you won't get hired. I immediately put resumes like the one on the right in the trash.
The most space is taken up by the titles of the sections, not the sections (actual info) themselves.
Also, if you have some work history, being able to say "redesigned X product to take out 20% of cost"would be better than cute formatting.
It all may get scanned and put into a word-recognition algorithm, so the weird formatting may make the scanning go poorly.
