Except for the fact that the term "dead ringer" originally meant a lookalike horse that was used to fool bookies during races. The dead part is meant in the same way as dead shot, dead heat, etc.

My teacher told us about that at the beginning of the year, and my friends have gotten extremely annoyed with me now that I say "Saved by the bell" a lot.
