at first I thought the mom was a child, then I was wondering why SHE couldn't read, then I remembered a good chunk of people in America are illiterate. then I noticed that was the mom.
I need help here, please, because a) I'm terrible at guessing the ages of children and b) I don't know what age children normally learn to read.
I was, for a long time, under the impression that kids could read by around three years old and write, count, and do basic addition and subtraction by four, but the funny looks I get tell me I may be mistaken.
It's different for everybody. I think you start reading with 5/6/7. Basic subtraction and addition is usually a bit earlier so 4/5.
But it also depends on what you define as "reading ". Most kids are able to write their name relatively early and can also recognise it when they see it (is that reading?)
Thank you so much for clearing that up for me! That means MY family is the weird one. My mom could read the newspaper at three. Not UNDERSTAND, mind you, but she could read it aloud. Both my brother and I could read and write very well before preschool and I'd always thought that was the norm, ya know?
