Sea is honestly the better choice. Pools are full of chlorine and child piss. The salt in the sea at least filters the fish poop etc a lot better than the chlorine in the pool. Mother nature can deal with these things rather well.
I have personal experience with this. When I was little, I used to prefer the pool. But I got an ear infection and it was really, really painful, and the doctor told me and my parents that it's because the pool is literally full of piss and basically that we're idiots for going to the pool when the sea is nearby. So we started going to the sea, and abracadabra, things got better. I also had to take antibiotics for the infection, so thanks pool of piss.
So basically if you dislike saltwater because "boo hoo it hurts my eyes" or "boo hoo I'm scared of fish" then I have nothing to tell you. Unless you live in like Australia or some other location in which it's not safe to go swimming in the sea, then I completely understand why you'd rather swim in pee.
I forget that I live in an inland country and thus only encounter the sea when I go on vacation. Yes, if you live in a country in which the sea is close to freezing or is contaminated by something, then it's only logical people won't swim in it.
People say the Puget Sound has good water because it's cold and airated and good for life, but I call bullshit because it constantly smells like decomposing plant flesh. And because there's seaweed EVERYWHERE.
I've never been to Puget Sound itself but I swam in a couple of lakes in Bellevue and they're not bad. A lot of algae and it doesn't smell quite like the sea, but nothing to be concerned about.
I have a problem with plants in general, especially if they're wet and stick to me or wrap themselves around my legs and creep up towards my groin like some start of a bad hentai.

Creep towards your groin? Stop swimming and finish jumanji lol
Have you never walked into a big clump of seaweed and the motion of the water makes the seaweed rise to the waterline which tends to be close to the bottom of your shorts?
I don't like some feelings either but I would rather have seaweed tickle my legs than take antibiotics for a month because of infection caused by a dirty pool as I had mentioned earlier. But my parents didn't know better, and obviously neither did I. So if you ever plan on having kids, remember that an icky feeling is still a hundred times better than excruciating pain for a few weeks thanks to which you can't sleep, and hearing problems for the rest of their lives. Just because it hasn't happened to you doesn't mean it can't happen to them.
Never been, but Croatia's south's sea is amazing. You just have to be careful about sea urchins, but even those are rare and live mostly in deeper parts of the sea.
