Unfortunately with common core as the new norm those steps aren't what works anymore. Now the answer doesn't matter and the previous methods of obtaining the answer are frequently incorrect.
Yeah, my niece was having trouble with multiplication and division. I looked at how they had taught her to do it, and I was like "that's because they taught you the worst way to work these problems". I showed her the old ways and she got it with no issue. I told her to use the right way to check the answer she gets from the ridiculous method they taught her, but only show her work with that method.

I feel bad for you son. I got 99 problems but math ain't one!
Just a tip for those who are interested: If you get the app (iOS or Android), it costs $2.99 once and you get step-by-step solutions in it forever. The online one is a monthly subscription that costs MORE than the app does every month! So if you just need step-by-step solutions, the app is a steal at only $3.
