Except they're trees so they don't get shy. It's a chemical phenomenon

Not necessarily. It's suspected to be that the tips of the branches are either sensitive to abrasion so they stay away from each other, or they desire light so when they start approaching the shade of another tree they recoil.

i saw these trees a couple of months ago in a forest reserve. the patterns they form are really pretty.
