The egg isn't fertilized. Like, women get periods every month when our egg in our uterus isn't fertilized. Same thing with the chicken. She still lays an egg even if she doesn't mate with a male chicken.

But if you mean to ask how it is that the eggs we buy don't have chicks, then, you should know that hens lay eggs even if they have not been mating with a male. Any egg laid in those circumstances will never hatch because it is unfertilized, and that is the standard practice for any commercial egg operation.
It is utterly barbaric that people still do this. How about when that scientists wife is pregnant (or the scientist herself, depending on gender) we cut them open at 4 months and put their unborn baby in a petri dish and post it to the world under the title "Look how cool". To be clear this is not an attack on the OP but on the barbarian who did this to so many unborn chickens. Animals matter too.
