Well yeah. Had anakin not been a jedi and not been saved by Palpatine and turned into vader he would have died, he burned up. But he was a jedi.

Great idea in theory, but wouldn't he be a bit heavier than her? They'd have to be careful about weight distribution and standing in that weather wouldn't really be ideal considering the cold

The Mythbusters tested this, and proved that under normal circumstances, yes the panel wouldn't have been able to support them but. BUT, if they had tied the life jackets to the makeshift raft, they could have both survived.
