I would say it should be based more on how they serve their stories. Story is paramount. Complexity is pointless if they don't move the story.

Makes me think of Emma Swan from Once Upon A Time. I love that the writers took the hero, who you were rooting for, and made her go dark. I think it made her really so much more relatable and they really took the writer saying of "torture your lovelies" literally. I just love what they did with her in the respect.
