I dunno. A lot of things that are clearly meant to be jokes can be offensive simply because they belie a fundamental apathy towards a serious situation, or use someone else's lifelong struggle as a catalyst for a moment's humor.
Ehhh, there's a line. I can see the "harmless humor" angle, but I can also see the "It stopped being both harmless and funny the fifteenth time I heard it this week" angle. It's like fat jokes - nobody's pissed off because fat jokes are really that vile (at least, most of them aren't), fat people get pissed off at them because they've heard them twice a day since whenever they gained the weight and they've gotten tired of being reduced to a punchline.
