I would argue that burning the trash is the superior option. Landfills only produce methane from the biological or biodegradable matter deposited in them, and then only when carefully managed. Burning the trash, on the other hand, releases energy from all combustible matter in the waste stream whether it is biodegradable or not. Furthermore, the flue gas (exhaust) from burning the trash is carefully scrubbed to remove pollutants (at least it is at the waste-to-energy station near me). Also, the ashes from burning the trash need not necessarily go to a landfill at all, they could be used as filler in construction materials.

Yeah I remember watching dirty jobs and they commented on how inside it was very pungent but outside you couldn't smell a thing
