If you read the lyrics, for example, on the second day they got 2 turtle doves AND a partridge in a pear tree, they weren't saying that they got the tree on another day

It's a cumulative song you name the current and the previous gifts I provided a link
There has been confusion as to if the items listed in the song are repeated or were actually given each day over and over. If listening to the lyrics it seems that they are given each day so cumulative. Then again who knows.
I just counted upwards for each day. First day is one, second day is two plus that, making three, third day is six, and then the pattern showed. Day 2 is 2 bigger than day 1, and day three is 3 bigger than day 2. The same follows for the rest, so you get 1+3+6+10+15+21+28+36+45+55+66+78
I'm sure there is some actual way to write out an equation giving the same result in a clear and concise way, but I don't know what that might be. This is the best I can do, but I'll definitely be thinking about it
Okay, got it.
You can use s=x(x+1)/2 for each day, where x=which day it is and s is the total number of gifts for that day. So, on the first day, you will get 1(1+1)/2 gifts, which is 1. Second day, you get 2(2+1)/2 gifts, which is 3. By setting this equation as your base, and setting the value of x to each whole number between and including 1 and 12, you'll have the number for each day. Use S1, S2, S3 etc to signify the total for each individual day, and then your final step will be to add all the S's together, giving your answer in a mathematically sound way. This can be used for more than just 12 days too :)
It has come. The final day of Christmas. Your True Love has apparently finished the gift giving with one final wave of fowl and friends and foliage alike.
You survey your surroundings with awe and dismay, noting the gifts.
You will care for 12 partridges, 22 doves, 30 hens, 36 calling birds, 42 geese, and 42 swans.
You will, somehow, shelter 40 maids, 36 dancers, 30 lords, 22 pipers, and 12 drummers. You have yet to figure out how or why they have come. Is there a contract? Is that why they are taking your Golden Rings?
You will buy those 40 maids 40 cows, that they may milk, while still figuring out whether you need to pay these people. Have they heard word from your True Love??
You will learn to live with the odor of 12 pear trees. Somehow.
You will spend nearly $600,000 within the season on food, shelter, land, and ponds for the waterfowl. You have pawned most of the rings, the ones your gifted humans have not taken; even so your fervent desire for just one for yourself calls to you through the music: the pounding of 12 drums and 22 pipers. The music beckons, commands, reassures.
You are lulled to sleep by it, reassuring you that spending your life caring for these precious gifts from your True Love is your destiny.
You have pets.
You have trees.
You have an army.
And by the gods, You will have that Golden Ring.
Merry Christmas
