Would be useless on sand. That's why desert vehicles have thick tyre threads.

some, not enough to for desert sands, but enough to be of some use in more jungly hilly bits

BB-8 wasn't a special effect. They actually made him and he didn't slide around.

I assumed he was some sort of polymer blend. Otherwise all the droids would be shocking every person that touches them.
