Generally at a bar, I either have an open tab with a card, at which point I pay about 15% on the card, or I pay cash on every drink, and give 1 buck per drink when I get the drink.

When you pay him for your drinks, if you're paying on a credit card, inform him you'd like to tip and how much you'd like to tip. If you're paying cash, either tell him to keep the change, or if the amount of change is too high for your tipping budget, wait until he brings your change back and give him the proper amount informing him that it's his tip.

Most of the time at a crowded bar you just put everything on your tab and add a tip when you close the tab at the end of the night. Or if paying in cash, you just hand him/her cash then either say "it's all set" and walk away (if you handed them the cost + tip) or when you get change back you throw down an extra dollar and walk away. They'll pick it up eventually

Bartenders thank you. Though, we often times have a tip jar for your convenience.

We usually just throw the tip on the bar and go about our business. Almost always the bartenders sees it before somebody else gets it.
