Theoretically music is better now than ever before. The ability to make music is more accessible than ever before, so the talent pool is a lot larger than it ever has been. Since there is so much music out there, listeners really need to search to find what they like. Once you have found it you will likely enjoy it more than anything you would have heard in an earlier generation. I believe the complaint of today's music being bad mostly comes from rock fans, since rock is pretty much dead now. Maybe try and find a taste for rap or electronic music, since both genres are currently thriving.
