We were fighting the Brits, who were stationed there. They were here without invitation, and almost all the fighting happened here except what went down on the lakes.
And we kinda won.
Look, I like poutine and we gave to have a passport to go to Canada now. Just saying it would make it a lot easier on me if we just took them over and made it another state.
I like my fries and gravy man!
1. Most of the fighting went down in the states yes but battles were fought within the Canadian border today.
2. We didn't win the war of 1812, neither side gained nor lost anything, except casualties, the treaty of Ghent furthered that.
We were attacked. We did not start the aggression. We got control of Toledo, Detroit, and the Great Lakes. We got the limeys out once and for all; how is that not a win?
We had control of the Great Lakes region since 1784, although Britain kept forts in the region for 15 years incase the US couldn't keep hold of its territories, from the Peace of Paris.
Yes, they were still there because we agreed to stay East of the Appalachians after the revolution. The British still had forts on the lakes and strangled shipping when we went back to war.
We don't disagree on the facts, I just can't see where you say we didn't win anything?
Because nothing measurable was gained or lost. It was a war that happened and immediately afterward everything went back to the way it was. We also never agreed to stay east of the Appalachians. The British forced colonists to stay easy because, at the time, the French and hostile natives towards the English inmhabited the region. After independence was won Americans could cross the Appalachians at there own risk.
Technically yes, and the Northwest Ordinance officially opened the area West of the Appalachians. But the war of 1812 was not a war of acquisition. We were not fighting to win anything, exactly. We were fighting off the British and their Indian allies. What we won was our independence, again. We kinda also got Florida out of it.
But again, it wasn't a matter of what we gained; we were not fighting to gain anything, we were repelling a British invasion. We won, they lost.
The British Invasion came as an after effect of us declaring war on them for their constant bullying of American traders. They conscripted merchant sailors into their navy along with supporting Hostile natives to the US. I get what you're saying but it wasn't a war we won or lost but one that nothing changed afterwards. No new policies, no new trade, no new lands, nothing changed. The main US goal for the war was to stop the Birtish from blockading French ports as that affected trade and to stop the British from conscripting American sailors. Neither were officially accomplished as the napoleonic wars ended by the end of the war so the Brits didn't need the soldiers that they'd previously needed.
I live across the river from detroit and go there often to shop and other stuff, concerts and such. I always get reminded whenever I smile and say hello to everyone that makes eye contact with me that "toto, I don't think we're in Canada anymore" lol. But seriously why don't you guys smile more?
You know, I picked up a couple on the highway having car trouble several years ago who were from Alaska. They were complaining about how cold it can get here too. I almost drove off the road. I was like "you're from fucking ALASKA dude! That's the fucking frozen wasteland!"
He said it gets cold there but our cold is more humid or something, and it feels colder. I hate the cold myself, but I don't think our winters are bad at all.
Haha you're probably just used to it. I'm mostly acclimated to the weather in the down in the south and pacific islands. Korea was had pretty chilly too now that I think about it, especially near the Han river at night
In Canada, you can defend yourselves with the same amount of force that they use. If they attack you without a weapon, you can't attack them with a weapon etc. Unless you are a woman or a child. In that case, you can use more force.
And we kinda won.
