I only hope that there's an afterlife because of a friend of mine..he lost someone important to him years ago,and started believing in religion in the hopes he'd one day see her again..
No, agnostics believe in something, they just don't know in what, atheists don't believe in anything cause it doesn't make sense, but that doesn't mean they can't hope they are wrong cause, let's face it, the idea of all being over once you die is scary, even though it makes perfect sense
I am an atheist and I do not believe in any after life nor do I hope there is one, simply because it makes this one life that we have so much more precious and miraculous. You're the product of a million coincidences, so why bother anyway? You can't catch up, you can't make up for something, so better get your shit done right in the first run, here and now.
.
I respect it, when people hope somehow, they can meet with a deceased loved being once again, but if they really believe they have found a way, it think that's childish, to put it friendly.

So this theory got my attention awhile back. I think I first heard about it from NGT, although I don't know if it was from a Cosmos episode or StarTalk or something else entirely.

"No, agnostics believe in something, they just don't know in what"
Agnostics essentially accept that the is no way to prove or disprove the existence of deities, so don't attempt to have an opinion on whether thy exist or not.
"let's face it, the idea of all being over once you die is scary"
Not really.
What do you (and presumably others) find so scary? Nothing is nothing, so there would be nothing to fear, besides that fact that you wouldn't be there to fear it anyway.
I don't mean to judge your fear, I'm just curious.
i can only talk for myself but what is scary about that to me is the idea of not existing anymore. You are a person with a mind, with constant thoughts, constant feelings and one day it's all going to stop; no more thoughts, no more feelings, everything that was in your head and you never shared with anyone will simply cease to exist
I get that, but I don't understand why it's scary. I didn't exist for billions of years, and I won't exist for more billions of years after I die. I don't see a cause for fear or anxiety over it.
Apparently there are people who believe in a higher instance of some sort, but not in afterlife, However, if you don't believe in (a) higher being(s) or force(s), how would you believe in any sort of reincarnation or afterlife?
Actually I think _you_ made a moot point here. Believing in an afterlife is very similar to believing in a higher being or some higher force. The "just" in your argument implied - to me - there could as well be atheists who believe in an afterlife. Which is pretty, pretty unlikely. Also I didn't assume any logical (better: consistent) thinking in religious people, but in atheists.
"Believing in an afterlife is very similar to believing in a higher being or some higher force."
Yes.
"The "just" in your argument implied - to me - there could as well be atheists who believe in an afterlife."
Yes.
"Which is pretty, pretty unlikely."
Yes, which means it's definitely possible, i.e. atheists *can* believe in an afterlife.
"Also I didn't assume any logical (better: consistent) thinking in religious people, but in atheists."
Atheists can also be illogical/inconsistent.
Your point was moot because the question "how would you believe in _____?" is pointless, as belief doesn't necessarily need justification.

And it is at least scary to me, even though i am an atheist and don't believe in afterlife
