I don't know about that, but I always figured it was to warn you of the potential for random rockslides and accidents stopping cars just around a corner. Basically, don't drive too fast and be ready to stop randomly and on a dime.

They have this in the simulator at driver training school!! You have to maneuver your car around rocks randomly rolling and bouncing into the road. It didn't matter if you went off-road to avoid them they still got to you
