Interstingly enough, this has in part to do with handedness. The top part style is more common of right handed men, and the bottom more common of left handed men. The latter having faced a number of issues historically. The word left even has its basis in a word that meant sinister. This has persisted though culture and been reinforced by it in suble but tangeable ways to give us the connotations we have today.
Had a friend who literally lived this. I'm thoroughly creeped out.
