I've actually been there. It's nice. The sand is super slidey so you can bring a sled and pretend it winter.

Not sure if the guards would like it, but you can.

They tell you when you walk in which areas are for tours, camping, and general silliness. When I went I just took off my shoes and damn near sank into the sand. It's also an active missile test range.
