I think those are to stop cars from driving into the store front. Don't ask me why someone would drive into a store front, there are just a lot of idiots in the world.

That's why they're also in front of important government buildings, like to prevent the 1993 WTC Bombings.

In front of stores it's to protect from.crashes into the stores and people purposefully crashing through the doors to steal merchandise. On another note the 93 wtc attack has nothing to do with that stuff. They parked a vehicle in a public parking garage.

My school has an orb outside, but it's behind the fence and not even by the entrance so I'm not even sure what purpose it serves

Don't listen to anyone else here. Those orbs are for teenagers to instinctively jump over and look sweet as fuck doing so.

It's a good thing Target made those giant orbs red. Otherwise they could've easily had blue balls in front of their stores.
