Went through the tile maybe? School ceiling tiles are basically paper mache.

But s/he said "shattered" which implies plastics or glass which unless they threw really hard would be difficult to break through

Yeah, the ones I'm talking about shatter. Think of very thin styrofoam. And I've never seen a school with plastic or glass ceiling tiles, schools don't spend money on IMPORTANT things like INFRASTRUCTURE! That'd be ridiculous!

It could just be that the tile got jarred out of place, causing it to fall and break

I go to a school that was built in the 1930's (never renovated except to to add new AC and pipes) The ceiling tiles fall off weekly so our little old janitor comes out and puts it back up. They are styrofoam that's less than 1/2 inch and easily break apart

^exactly! Our STEM extracurricular activities have literally 0 funding. They are closing down all of those clubs.
