I know it's for plot convenience, but it bothers me more than it should!

Do they have something like the Tardis where it translates after a few minutes?

They have an internal translater on Star Trek. Which of course can learn new languages instantaneously, and almost never get mentioned, except in ways to make it even less plausible.

Could you imagine how awkward it would be in real life. even if the technology worked. It would be delayed and idioms would come out all wrong. ...what show is this?

Well obviously in the show, it should look like it's being dubbed. However that's possibly the only inconsistancy I'm willing to ignore.

I think they actually explain it in the show somewhere, maybe in SG-1? I could be wrong.

They're actually all speaking Chinese, the earth was dominated by the Chinese and in turn everyone from Earth spoke Chinese. So, all of humanity once living on the terra formed planets spoke Chinese but may have some different dialects like Chinese does now. If you pay attention, they swear in and words in the background are written in Chinese. Just, for the sake of the audience they speak English.
