There is actually a theory that depression is in the rise in the US because of social media. People don't post shit like their debt to income ratio, only vacation photos and photos of their new stuff. Keeping up with the Jonses is a lot harder when the Jonsrs get to decide what you know about their lives.
It's sad that someone's life could be so superficial and insignificant that they would have to justify their existence... and more importantly a bolstered sense of self worth through the acquisition of material goods and bragging about it.
