Yea I remember back in my day we would spend the last hour or so cleaning the classroom, chalk board, erasers, desk etc.

They can learn how to adult. Nobody cleans up my vomit but me...I don't like to adult.

However with American work ethic, all the jobs will be half-assed

But maybe instilling this would improve work ethic. If the kids have to clean, they'll be more neat and clean during the day, pick up after themselves, and try harder, learning the values of that it could improve work ethic and being proud of all that you do

Blacken the chalkboard? As in wipe it down?

As in use charcoal to make it blacker when it starts getting faint.. At least that was what we did when I was in secondary school.. .i guess they use whiteboards now

Yes whiteboards now, but back when I was in grade school we just use water to clean the chalkboard and would return it to its former blackness
