To be fair, there are no points over the i s. And at least in older German handwriting, maybe also in English, people used to make a little extra line over the u to clarify that it was not an n.

I thought in cursive the m had four lines and the n looked like an m(with three).. I could be wrong

No, it's 3 for m and 2 for n. At least l, that's h9w I learned it.
