That would be a good story for a book. Everyone is separate from there other half, those who aren't an exact match never really know why they aren't satisfied but they feel something isn't 100%. You can live without finding your other half, but if your true other half dies... So do you.
But can you imagine, let's say we all have half a shape, symmetrically cut in half, and our soulmate has the exact shape. With the 7 billion + people on this world, there have to be shapes that look really similar. Imagine spending your whole life with someone who is close to perfect, but then, the nurse tending to you on your death bed, has the exact other half.
