US wasn't particularly interested in land based armored warfare when planes could routinely bomb tanks with impunity. Plus the Shermans had a shit ton of utility. If you blew a whole bunch of Shermans up you take pieces from the wreckage, the chassis, the turret, the engine, tracks, etc, and build another sherman in the field. They weren't much in the way of quality compared to other tanks, but you could put a lot more Shermans onto the field than Tigers. They we're also a lot lighter, so they didn't get stuck out in the rain and mud, and Tigers had to be routinely abandoned with their tank crews because train routes had been sabotaged. Tiger Crews were notorious for hiding in wait for Shermans because they couldn't retreat without being targeted by units that could kill them.
