They have machines that do most of the digging... and in reality if it wasn't for bribes, the canal would have (and should have) gone through Nicaragua. There are several large lakes that would have been joined together, and it would have cost about half of panama and been over twice as wide (and far easier to widen if needed). Yay politics
The thing is, it was built on Panama because the people of my country from the 1500's onwards used the same piece of land which is now used by the boats because it was much safer and cheaper to transport things to countries like Peru. It could have been in Nicaragua but Panama has been used for a lot of time for this

I think that there were rumors that they're going to create a second canal in Nicaragua. Also you really don't want a canal that doesn't have any locks. It would have a detrimental effect on the wildlife.
