I mean, when he couldn't move, in his crystal form. The bad guy had the right idea, except they don't need to encase a student in concrete. Just put him in a sturdy box full of BBs and have a student sit on it. The force required to break the box would injure the student, thus he would have to give up, probably.

Hm. Even if they did do that though, there was still some story they'd have to fill in. So that's probably why they didn't, and the end was more...satisfying for the characters than it would have been if they simply sat on a box
