They either replaced an area of brick and are trying to blend it in with the older brick, or it is not a true brick wall and are trying to make it more realistic.

Maybe he's just cleaning the ones that have gotten dirty and they *are* actually all the same colour?

He's painting them, I work in a hardware store and painting bricks are cheap way to update a building's facade. It will only last a few years, but is far cheaper then re-laying an actual fancy brick wall.

But if they were painted wouldn't the paint peel eventually? I've never seen any bricks peeling paint before

I think it is more of a stain that they use instead of actual paint.

In art history romanic buildings were decorated in a very subtil way and so one of the tecniques they used was using diferent colored bricks... I suppose is a tradition we inherited, but it probably is cheaper to just paint a few in a different shade lol
