The Great British Bake Off gives me so much inspiration to start baking, but the last time I did I blew up the microwave and almost burned down my kitchen so I won't be trying again

Your first mistake is using your microwave for baking. Even if it was a microwave oven, normal ovens are what is supposed to be used.

I wasn't trying to bake a cake using the microwave, god no. I had the oven preheated, made the cake mix, the whole shebang. I just melted the chocolate in the microwave thinking it would save time and KABOOM.
