I have a neighbour in his late 60s with multiple degrees, including masters degrees. But back then it was much easier to get one, he said he got to pick his courses, there was no thesis, and didn't take long to finish a degree. Also much more affordable! This was in Canada so not sure what it was like in Michigan, but probably happened around the same time.
