The Herbstferien (fall holiday) are still called Kartoffelferien by some old folks.
My parents also remember that they'd get some days off to collect Kartoffelkäfer (potato bugs) which were a threat to the potatos.
I think Kartoffelkäfer is one of my favourite words!
I'm from down east Maine but currently going to school in Bangor. My roommate is from up that way and he said the same thing. There's just not enough students doing it anymore.
We have this in Norway too. Even though most kids don't need to pick potatoes, we still have a fall break. It's kalled "høstferie" where høst means both harvest and autumn.
I guess it's exactly the same in Denmark?
