One of the first anime that I was able to discuss with my father after watching it, and now I'm gonna have to watch it again between JoJo's Bizarre Adventure and the Monogatari series.
Honestly, I'd will probably go see it because of the special effects but I find it sad that most of the entertainment these days is so violent. Not a fun comment, but just my opinion.
Well, in the original movies the philosophy was at least as important as the violence, and the TV series kept that up as much as possible. To me, this movie seems to be trying for that as well, capturing the Major's feeling of disconnect from the world brought on by her being a brain in a cybernetic body, a ghost in her shell. Wonder how much of the disconnect is also from other cyborgs being common, like it was in the first movie (if I remember correctly)...
I think it's to do with the fact that people are more likely to see the film because Scarlett Johansson is such a widely known and recognisable actress.
