Brandon Sanderson is getting there. The first Mistborn trilogy is the typical old fashion type (Maybe 1700s era), and the second trilogy is set in 1800s style. He's doing a third set that's supposed to take place in the 1980s era, and will eventually do a futuristic trilogy as well. All based on the same magic systems of Allomancy, Feruchemy, and Hemalurgy, and all set on the world of Scadrial. :) The man also writes like a machine. He's come out with 4 books this year.

I would write stories like this in late elementary and early middle school. Nobody liked the concept. Good to know people find the subject interesting now, I may start writing a story like this.

Shadowrunners Hong Kong is a little like this. Modernised magic but obviously there is a lot of discrimination cause humans.
