So 100 years being knocked up wasn't so terrifying?

I may be misremembering this but I think there was a person whose job it was to wake up the person who woke everyone else up

They probably worked what we call today 'swing shift' so that they would be up by the time they had to go to work knocking on doors.

Didn't they have any clocks at all. Those big that go dong dong every hour. Just make it silent for all the other hours except when 7 o clock hand moves that silencer. Or buy a rooster. Anything''s better than long sticky morning wood of a stranger. They had phones. We had national wake up service that rings you. It lasted until 2010s

Roosters don't crow only in the morning. The picture also says before alarm clocks not before clocks.

You're right. You can't wind a rooster. But they could make some kind of mechanism, even with glass hour. I mean they probably payed those wakers. Better use it to make some Wylie Coyote shit.
