This is an interesting trick, but it is essentially a waste of time. There are several more efficient methods of performing multiplication, so this actually fails in the common usage of the word clever.
Because the world uses the decimal system and if Japanese schools never teach the world wide numerical standard Japanese engineers and the like would never be able to get a job outside of japan.
@eternal1 thank you for calling me a weeaboo. I'm actually learning Japanese as my second language, and have never seen anime before. It surprised me that they learn Arabic first, so I simply asked. I didn't realize this would happen.
It's obvious that they'd use arabic numerals cuz thats what everyone uses in math, incliding Japanese people. I called you a weeaboo cuz ur comment implied that u thought that the japanese version of numbers would be superior/preferred in japan. Kind of like how some weebs think japanese people use katanas instead of guns.
See, I study the Japanese language, and haven't really dabbled in the culture all that much (outside of Bowing.) I figured they would learn kanji numbers first, then Arabic. It just seemed like it made sense. granted, numbers in kanji get huge quickly (3,012 is 三千十二, which is pronounced sansenjyuuni.)
Also, I'm pretty sure the kanji numbers *are* preferred, as, yknow, that's their language. They DO use Arabic, but I'm pretty sure they prefer kanji :p
Not too sure about that it's basically the same concept of doing math like this: fifty-three plus seven equals sixty. Instead of: 53 + 7 = 60. Which would you prefer to do. The whole world uses algebraic numerals because it has been unanimously decided that in order to trade effectively between countries everyone would have to put the same values to the same items and that's why most numeric systems were dropped for the algebraic system. I'm sure Japanese people still learn the kanji for the numbers but that's only because it's part of their language and for being able to read old text or signs but for actual math work regular old numbers work best because literally anyone on the planet can read what they wrote and check their math regardless of nationally or language.
But
Why is the initial picture using English/arabic numerals and not Japanese kanji
