All the pets I've had so far were actually stray and attacked animals that I took in, and it's so heartwarming to see them recover and remember how to love. :)
My cat is actually a rescued pet. Someone left her and her family in a factory when she was a kitten

The problem is many dogs from shelters are mentally messed up and are more difficult to train and are generally more of a hassle, most people don't want that
If you are an experienced--or semi-experienced--pet-owner, then you have a special mandate to adopt! My first pet was a cat who had all but 3 of her teeth kicked out and who had been victim of an attempted drowning. She was terrified of us for her first 3 years, but we knew if we sent her back to the shelter after 3 tries she would be put down. Eventually, I could call her like a dog, and she followed me around the house for cuddles. Would do again...
Please at least take a look at the animals in shelters. Then you can decide if you are up for whatever It is the animals bring with them. My dog was wonderfully trained (only downside is that's she's afraid of sleighs and noone knows why) but couldnt stay with her family because of a divorce.
When my babies finally leave me and I if I haven't taken another stray in - This is my plan. I want to go to one and get the ones that's been there the longest.
Absolutely right. Our first dog was adopted and nobody really told us the story of what he had experienced, but he was messed up pretty bad. He suddenly attacked my wife in a way I had to get her to the ER and still today her hands have _very_ noticeable scars. We/she made mistakes but then afterwards we found out that we only knew a very small fraction of his history and we were extremely hesitant from then on to consider adoption.
All the cats and dogs my family ever owned were either from the pound or we found wondering the streets lost and alone. Well almost all the only ones that didn't was 2 dogs one came from a family that was moving out of the country and was unable to take their dog. The other was after that dog who died I was heart broken and my Dad went to get me a dog from the pound but they was actually out of dogs. So he took me to a pet store and I got a puppy which became the dog I loved more than anything. But when it comes to hamsters, guinea pigs, rabbits, mice, fish, and animals like that we got them from pet stores. Only because you can't get them from the pound.
Actually, it's harder to train a pound dog if you have kids, especially young ones, or it's your first dog.
I'm all for adoption but buying is good too. All dogs are good dogs. If those dogs that are for sale rather than adoption aren't bought, chances are they'll end up in the pound.
If they have really messed up pasts, which some pound dogs can have, they definitely are difficult. A relative of mine has a pound dog, he was hard to train, but is now sweet and caring through hard work.
let's ignore the fact that adopting a dog ( at least where i live) is a impossible progress, true experience, i wanted to adopt first i called several shelters after playing phone tag for day got call back from 3 who insisted i come in and fill a adoption form shortest being 4 pages long, no problem ok. then they wanted all 3 by the way to do credit checks seriously for a dog, ok whatever, next i get told they have to come to my house and do a "home inspection" really,ok, next i get told my house which is the country middle of nowhere is not good unless i fence it in, 12 acres of woods sitting beside neighbors who have 50 plus each really,,, my main point if you want poeple to adopt more which i agrea we should do don't make it so hard and next to impossible,, i'm sure there are reasons for all this but for someone who works full time and lives far out from the city. i found going to a buddy who just had puppies and buying was less time consuming and a lot less stress
Yes, and sometimes you have to lie about whether or not you will let your animal be an 'outdoor' animal...Which is dumb if they are big and need exercise...
I'm all for adoption but buying is good too. All dogs are good dogs. If those dogs that are for sale rather than adoption aren't bought, chances are they'll end up in the pound.
...I did good?
