The volcanic ash of what appears to be a basalt volcano consists of water vapor and numerous rapidly dissolved molecules that become a collection of ions. All of them are moving rapidly and rubbing against each other chaotically. It's creating a very dense storm cloud. And also lava.

I didn't really want the scientific explanation, all I wanted was "lightning hitting lava" but thanks anyway
