Astronomers don't have to be good at math. Astrophysicists do.

Astronomers should understand what they are seeing, and math is a part of it.

You can make math part of anything. Likewise you can have a very good understanding of how stars function and evolve at a chemical and conceptual physics level with very minimal mathematics. Besides, most of the math done in nearly every job (including the sciences and engineering) is performed by computers with programs that are already written and customized for a variety of specific applications. Just because math is difficult for mightyoak does not mean they cannot understand it.

You don't have to be good at computation, but you should understand what you are seeing.
